Overview
When working with layouts that use multiple dynamic content sources, it can be difficult to know exactly where each value is coming from. The unique Data Source Tooltip feature in the Divi Dynamic Content Helper plugin solves this by displaying a small tooltip whenever you hover over a dynamic content field in the Divi Builder. This tooltip clearly shows the source of the content label, tag, and source location, whether it’s the current post, a custom field, an options page, or another dynamic source.
In addition, the tooltip includes a convenient edit link, allowing you to quickly go directly to the source of the dynamic content, whether that’s a post or page in WordPress or a custom field.
FYI: If you also have our Divi Custom Fields Helper plugin installed, this feature integrates seamlessly, directly taking you to the Custom Fields window in the Divi Builder if enabled. Fun stuff!
Only For Logged-In Admins
The Dynamic Content Data Source Tooltip feature makes these dynamic fields immediately visible to logged-in administrators, providing a safe, non-intrusive way to see what content is dynamic without affecting what visitors see. This feature is especially useful for administrators or developers managing complex, content-rich sites, as it provides instant clarity on the origin of each dynamic value without needing to guess or search all over for it.
NOTE: This feature is only available in Divi 5 and is not available in Divi 4. Limitations in Divi 4 made it difficult or impossible for third-party developers to extend or customize certain functionality. We’re excited that Divi 5 provides more freedom and opportunities to build advanced features like this, and we hope you enjoy the new features we are able to create now.
How To Use
To start using the Dynamic Content Data Source Tooltipt feature, go to the Pee-Aye Creative menu in your WordPress backend, then select Divi Dynamic Content Helper. In the plugin settings interface, open the Data Source Tooltip tab from the left sidebar.
From there, enable the main feature setting, and additional settings will appear, allowing you to configure how the tooltip behaves and what it highlights.
Tooltip Position
Set where the tooltip appears in relation to the dynamic content. Options include top, right, bottom, or left, letting you position tooltips so they don’t obscure nearby content or interface elements.
Supported Content Types
You can choose which types of dynamic content display a tooltip. This gives you full control over which tooltips are visible and keeps your interface clean. The settings integrate directly with other features of the plugin or features built into Divi, ensuring a native and seamless experience.
Inline Variables
Show tooltips for Dynamic Inline Variables to quickly view the source of text-based dynamic content added directly inside Divi modules. This also displays the variable tag used, making it easy for admins to see where each value originates without needing to open module settings.
Global Dynamic Content Sources
You can enable this feature to view tooltips for content pulled from Global Dynamic Content Sources, such as posts, users, or taxonomies, anywhere on the site. This is especially helpful when working with templates or sitewide layouts.
Divi Variables
Enable this setting to display tooltips for Divi variables, making it easy to trace dynamic values that come from Divi’s built-in variables manager feature. The cool bonus feature we’ve added here is that the tooltip’s edit link opens the Variables window in the Divi Builder for fast access..
FYI: If you also have our Divi Custom Fields Helper plugin installed, the tooltip’s edit link will take you directly to the Custom Fields window in the Divi Builder for quick edits and management.
Divi Dynamic Content
You can also display tooltips for Divi’s default dynamic content, such as post titles, excerpts, and more, to quickly see where the data comes from. The tooltip’s edit link opens the source location, allowing you to easily jump in and make any needed changes.
Examples
Once configured, open any page or post on the frontend. When hovering over dynamic content, the tooltip will appear showing the source of the content, along with a convenient edit link that takes you directly to the source, whether that’s the backend edit screen of a post or page, a custom field in the backend of a post or page, or custom fields in the builder if using our other plugin Divi Custom Fields Helper.
