Overview
Widow words are those single words that get pushed onto their own line at the end of a sentence or paragraph. This happens frequently on Divi sites, especially on smaller screens, and once you notice it, it is hard to unsee.
Many Divi users attempt to fix widows using soft returns, manual text resizing, or custom CSS workarounds. These approaches are time-consuming, inconsistent, and often break again at different screen sizes. The Widow Fixer feature in Divi Responsive Helper provides a simple, sitewide solution that works automatically with a single toggle.
When enabled, this setting analyzes your heading and paragraph text, depending on which options you choose, and checks how many words appear on the final line. If the last line falls below your defined minimum, the text is automatically adjusted so the final line contains the desired number of words. For example, setting a minimum of three words ensures no heading or paragraph ends with fewer than three words on its last line, helping your layouts look cleaner and more intentional across all devices.
The GIF below demonstrates how the Widow Fixer feature works.
How To Use
Configure The Settings Divi 4
To start using the widow fixer feature in Divi 4, go to the Divi > Theme Options menu in your WordPress backend, then select the Divi Responsive Helper tab, which our plugin adds. Select the Widow Fixer subtab and enable and configure the settings as needed.
Configure The Settings Divi 5
To start using the widow fixer feature in Divi 5, go to the Pee-Aye Creative menu in your WordPress backend, then select Divi Responsive Helper. In the plugin settings interface, open the Widow Fixer tab from the left sidebar. From there, enable and configure the settings as needed.
Paragraphs
Enable the Paragraphs toggle to apply the Widow Fixer to paragraph text across your site. Once enabled, an additional setting appears that lets you choose the minimum number of words allowed on the final line of each paragraph. You can select 2, 3, or 4 words, with 2 or 3 being the most commonly recommended values for natural reading flow on most devices.
Headings
Enable the Headings toggle (Divi 4) to apply the Widow Fixer to all headings together. In Divi 5, you can control widow behavior for each heading level from H1 to H6, giving you more flexibility based on your site’s structure.
After enabling a heading option, a dropdown appears allowing you to choose the minimum number of words permitted on the last line. You can select 2, 3, or 4 words. While any option can be used, it is important to consider the length of your headings. Very short or very large headlines may not have enough words to be adjusted cleanly on smaller screens, which is a natural limitation rather than an error.
Exclude Pages
The Widow Fixer can be disabled on specific pages if needed. This allows you to maintain complete control when specific layouts or content do not work well with automatic widow prevention.
To exclude pages, click on them in the list. Pages marked with a green checkmark are included, while pages marked with an X are excluded from the Widow Fixer feature.
Exclude Sections, Rows, And Modules
For more granular control, you can exclude individual sections, rows, or modules from the Widow Fixer. This option must be enabled in the Widow Fixer settings first. Once enabled, open the settings for the section, row, or module you want to exclude, go to the Advanced tab, and open the CSS ID & Classes panel. Add the following class to the CSS Class field:
exclude-drh-widow-fixer
Any element with this class applied will be ignored by the Widow Fixer, allowing you to fine-tune behavior without disabling the feature globally.
Please note that the Widow Fixer cannot be seen as visibly taking effect within the Divi Visual Builder preview.
