Open Graph Meta Tags and Social Sharing
When sharing posts or pages on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn, you want to ensure the correct image, title, and description are displayed. This is controlled by Open Graph meta tags, which help social media networks understand what content to show.
What Are Open Graph Meta Tags?
Open Graph meta tags are snippets of HTML code that define specific metadata about your web pages. They determine how URLs are represented when shared on social media. This includes the image, title, description, and other important elements that display when someone shares your content.
Why Is My Site Logo Showing Instead of the Post Image?
If the wrong image, such as your website logo, appears when you share a post, it means the Open Graph image tag is not properly set. By default, if you have a featured image for your post or page, social media platforms will pick up that image. However, without properly configured Open Graph meta tags, platforms may default to using the site’s logo or another general image.
Using an SEO or Open Graph Plugin
To ensure the correct image, title, and description are displayed when your content is shared on social media, it’s best to use an SEO plugin that handles Open Graph meta tags. Popular SEO plugins like Yoast SEO, Rank Math, All-in-One SEO, and SEOPress offer simple ways to manage Open Graph settings for each post or page.
- Yoast SEO: In the “Social” tab of the post editor, you can set a custom image, title, and description specifically for social sharing.
- Rank Math: Under the “Social” meta box for each post, you can define the Open Graph image, title, and description.
- All-in-One SEO: Use the “Social Networks” tab for each post or page to configure your Open Graph image and other sharing details.
- SEOPress: In the “Social” settings for each post, SEOPress allows you to define the Open Graph image, title, and description with ease.
All of these plugins work well with Divi, so you can use any of them that you prefer to handle Open Graph tags. Each plugin will take priority over the featured image and ensure the correct metadata is used when sharing content on social media platforms.
Enable Open Graph Meta Tags In Divi Social Sharing Buttons Maker
If you are not using an SEO plugin, Divi Social Sharing Buttons Maker plugin includes a built-in feature to handle Open Graph meta tags.
How It Works:
Our plugin first checks if you’re using one of the popular SEO plugins like Yoast, Rank Math, or All-in-One SEO. If it detects one of these plugins, the plugin will let the SEO plugin manage the Open Graph tags.
If no SEO plugin is found, our plugin allows you to enable Open Graph tags directly from the Divi Theme Options. This ensures you can define the necessary metadata for your posts without needing an extra SEO plugin.
Steps to Enable Open Graph Meta Tags:
1. Go to Divi Theme Options:
Navigate to the Divi Theme Options menu from your WordPress Dashboard.
2. Click on the “Divi Social Sharing Buttons Maker” Tab:
Find the tab specifically for the Divi Social Sharing Buttons Maker settings.
3. Enable Open Graph Meta Tags:
Locate the toggle labeled “Enable Open Graph Meta Tags” and switch it on. This will activate the automatic generation of Open Graph meta tags for your posts and pages.
4. Set the Featured Image:
Make sure each post or page has a featured image set, as this will be used as the Open Graph image when shared on social media. If you want a different image than the featured image, you can manually configure it via the SEO plugin mentioned earlier or in the module settings using the Custom Sharing Settings.
Best Practices For Open Graph Images:
- Size: Ensure that your Open Graph image is at least 1200 x 630 pixels for optimal display across social networks.
- Format: Use either JPG or PNG files.
By properly configuring Open Graph meta tags, you can control how your content appears when shared, leading to better visibility and user engagement on social platforms.
