Introduction
One of the most frustrating things when building websites with Divi is pasting content from external sources and ending up with terrible formatting behind the scenes. It may even affect the output on the frontend.
This happens constantly with content copied from ChatGPT, Microsoft Word, Google Docs, emails, and even other websites. The text might look okay visually at first, but the HTML often includes inline styles, unnecessary <span> tags, font sizes, colors, empty paragraphs, and other junk markup that makes the content harder to style and maintain properly.
To solve this problem, we added a new HTML Cleaner feature to Divi Assistant that lets you instantly clean messy HTML directly inside the Divi Builder without needing to manually edit code.
In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to enable the feature and use it to quickly remove unwanted formatting from Divi text areas with a single click.

Stop Fighting With Messy Pasted Content In Divi
Why Pasted Content Causes Problems
If you work with Divi regularly, you’ve probably run into situations where pasted content suddenly behaves strangely for no obvious reason.
Maybe the font size looks different in one paragraph. Maybe random colors appear. Maybe spacing is inconsistent between sections. Sometimes the content looks fine visually, but once you switch to the Text tab, you discover a giant mess of inline styles, <span> tags, font formatting, and unnecessary HTML wrappers hiding behind the scenes.
This happens constantly when copying content from ChatGPT, Microsoft Word, Google Docs, emails, or other websites.
Why Cleaning HTML Manually Is Frustrating
The frustrating part is that cleaning this manually is incredibly tedious. Most of the time, you end up going into the Text tab and trying to hunt down bad formatting line by line, removing inline styles, deleting empty tags, and stripping out unnecessary markup just to get your content back under control.
And if you miss something, the formatting problems often come back later when editing the page again.
That’s exactly why we created the new HTML Cleaner feature in Divi Assistant.
What The HTML Cleaner Can Remove
Instead of manually digging through messy code, you can now clean the HTML instantly directly inside the Divi Builder with a single click.
The feature lets you choose exactly what should be removed, including:
- Inline styles
- Inline font sizes
- Font colors
- <span> tags
- <font> tags
- Empty HTML tags
- Word-specific markup
- HTML comments
- Unnecessary attributes
- Extra wrapper elements
- Non-breaking spaces
- Excessive line breaks
- Pasted formatting from Word and Google Docs
This makes it much easier to keep your Divi content clean, lightweight, and consistent without wasting time manually editing HTML.
How To Enable The HTML Cleaner Feature
The HTML Cleaner feature is included in Divi Assistant. This is our flagship plugin with over 150 features, the essential mult-tool for any Divi website.

Clean HTML When Pasting In Divi 5
Use the HTML Cleaner feature in our Divi Assistant to automatically clean and remove messy HTML.
After installing and activating the plugin, go to:
Pee-Aye Creative > Divi Assistant > Visual Builder Helper > HTML Cleaner
From there, simply enable the feature and choose which cleanup options you want to make available inside the builder. Each option appears as a toggle, and when enabled, a corresponding checkbox will appear in the builder.
For example, you may want to allow cleaning inline styles and empty tags, but leave certain HTML elements untouched. The settings let you control exactly which cleanup tools appear for users inside the Divi Builder.
How To Clean HTML Inside Divi
Once enabled, the feature works directly inside Divi text areas such as Text Modules, Blurb Modules, and other modules with editable text content.
When editing content, simply click the new Clean HTML button inside the text editor.
This opens a small cleanup panel where you can choose which formatting and markup you want to remove. Note that any checkboxes you select or deselect will remain on those stages the next time you use the tool.
After clicking the clean button, the content is instantly cleaned directly inside the editor. Note that the results will depend on which checkbox options you have enabled in the settings, and which ones were selected when you clicked the blue Clean HTML button.
This is especially useful when pasting content from ChatGPT, Word, or Google Docs because you can immediately remove all the unnecessary formatting before continuing to design the page.
Final Thoughts
The new HTML Cleaner feature is a simple addition, but it solves a very common and very frustrating workflow problem in Divi.
Instead of manually fixing broken formatting or digging through messy HTML code, you can now clean pasted content instantly without leaving the builder.
If you regularly work with copied content in Divi, this is one of those features that quickly becomes part of your everyday workflow.

Hey Nelson – this is a really great new tool, thanks! Is there any chance of it being included with the Divi 4 version of Divi Assistant or is it just for Divi 5? – Thanks 🙂
Hi Gaby,
Glad you like that! We are not adding any features in the Divi 4 version of any plugin, as most new features we have added across our plugins since Divi 5 officially released. We did also explain this when releasing each plugin update for Divi 5. It’s just not financially feasible and practical to try to continue adding features in both, tripling or ore our developement effort.
