When working with Divi, one of the common limitations is the built-in search functionality, especially when dealing with custom post types and taxonomies. The default search module in Divi is quite basic and does not include any option to include custom post types or taxonomies in the result. This is where my Divi Search Helper plugin comes into play, providing a robust solution to enhance your site’s search capabilities. In this tutorial, I will show you how to use the Divi Search Helper plugin to include or exclude custom post types and taxonomies in your search results.

Introducing Divi Search Helper
The only way to search by custom post types and taxonomies is with our Divi Search Helper, a powerful plugin designed to supercharge the default Divi search module. It comes packed with features to customize the search results, including an AJAX search search results dropdown and settings to fine-tune search criteria. Here are some key features related to this tutorial:
- Include/Exclude Post Types: Choose which post types (e.g., posts, pages, products, custom post types) appear in search results.
- Include/Exclude Taxonomies: Decide which taxonomies (e.g., categories, tags, custom taxonomies) are considered during a search.
- Advanced Filtering: Apply advanced filters to control search behavior further.
- Familiar Interface: Easy-to-use settings that integrate seamlessly with Divi’s existing module options.
Configure Your Search Results Criteria
1. Install and Activate the Plugin
First, ensure that you have the plugin installed and activated. If you do not own this plugin yet, you will need to purchase the Divi Search Helper plugin from our website or join our Divi Adventure Club Membership to access all our plugins.
2. Access the Plugin Settings
Once activated, our plugin automatically adds new settings to the existing Divi Search module. Navigate to the page where you have the module or add the module to your layout and open the settings.
3. Configure Post Types
In the module settings, open the Search Criteria toggle and locate the section for post types. Here, you can choose whether you want to include or exclude the post types and taxonomy terms that you select. This is a new feature in version 2.1 of the plugin.
Based on that selection, you can proceed to select which post types you want to include or exclude from the search results.
- Include Post Types: Select the checkboxes for the post types you want to include.
- Exclude Post Types: Deselect the checkboxes for the post types you want to exclude.
For example, if you have custom post types like “Cats” and “Testimonials,” you can include these to make them searchable.
4. Set Up Taxonomies
Next, move on to the taxonomies section. Similar to post types, you can include or exclude specific taxonomies.
- Include Taxonomies: Select the relevant taxonomies you wish to include.
- Exclude Taxonomies: Deselect the ones you want to exclude.
This feature is particularly useful if you want to refine search results to only show posts categorized under specific taxonomies.
5. Advanced Filtering Options
The Divi Search Helper plugin also offers advanced filtering options to further customize search behavior. You can set parameters such as:
- Search Title: Include post titles in the search keyword criteria.
- Search Excerpt Only: Include post excerpts in the search keyword criteria.
- Search Content Only: Include post titles in the search keyword criteria.
6. Save and Apply Settings
After configuring your desired settings, make sure to save changes. Now when you visit the frontend of your page and enter a relevant search keyword, the results will only be based on the selected post types and taxonomies you selected!
Conclusion
Including advanced search functionality in Divi is very important for a great user experience and ensuring your visitors can easily find the content they want. I am quite biased, but I believe our Divi Search Helper plugin is the perfect (and only) way to improve the default search features in Divi.
