How To Use YouTube And Other External Sources As Dynamic Divi Background Videos

Over the years, people tried all sorts of workarounds. Some used a Video module as the background, forcing it full height and width, with content placed over top with negative margins and z-index. Others wrote custom code to add video URLs, built complex section layers, manually embedded videos from other sites with iframes, or tried swapping video sources with JavaScript after the page loaded. Most of these solutions felt more like duct tape and caulk than a proper workflow. None of these methods worked well, and there was never a reliable solution.

Thanks to the major updates in Divi 5’s code and better separation of background controls, we took another look at this problem. After a lot of testing and research, our lead plugin developer discovered a way to make dynamic background videos work directly within the builder, eliminating the need for those old workarounds.

Enable Dynamic Divi Background Videos

The background video feature is included in Divi Dynamic Content Helper. This plugin extends Divi’s dynamic content and custom field capabilities and adds support for using dynamic sources in places where Divi normally does not support them.

Enable Background Videos In Divi 5

After installing the Divi Dynamic Content Helper plugin, go to the WordPress dashboard to Pee-Aye Creative > Divi Dynamic Content Helper > Background Videos. Enable the main setting to activate dynamic background videos.

Once enabled, Divi adds dynamic content support directly to the background video controls in supported areas of the builder.

Supported Video Sources

Dynamic background videos are not limited to video files stored in WordPress. You can use YouTube videos, Vimeo videos, MP4 files stored in custom fields, supported oEmbed fields, and other external video sources. This makes it easy to work with video platforms and content workflows you may already be using.

Works With Divi’s Native Background Features

Dynamic background videos work with Divi’s existing background options, so you don’t have to give up any of the design tools you’re already familiar with. Background colors, gradients, images, patterns, masks, sizing options, and the Pause While Not In View setting all continue to work normally with dynamic video sources.

This allows you to use external video sources while still taking advantage of Divi’s full background design system.

To clarify, dynamic background videos behave just like Divi’s native background videos. External sources such as YouTube automatically autoplay, start muted, and loop continuously, while adding the ability to use dynamic video sources from custom fields.

Prepare Your Video Source

Before using dynamic background videos, you first need a video source. Since video files are often much larger than images, this feature provides an alternative to uploading MP4 files directly into the WordPress media library and assigning them manually in Divi.

Instead, upload your video to your preferred platform and copy the link you want to use. For example, you may choose to host videos on Vimeo, use an unlisted YouTube video, upload MP4 files to your own CDN or media server, or use another supported video source. The important thing is having the final video source ready so it can be stored in a custom field.

Once you have the final video link ready, the next step is storing that value in a custom field so Divi can load it as the section background.

Add The Video Source To A Custom Field

Now that you have your video source ready, the next step is storing that video link in a custom field so Divi can access it dynamically.

For this tutorial, we’ll assume you are already familiar with creating and assigning custom fields, but you may still need to create a new field specifically for background videos. If you only need a simple solution, you can use native WordPress custom fields. Many users also choose tools like ACF, Pods, or ACPT to organize fields into groups and make them easier to manage.

Create a field group if needed and add a field for the video source. Then assign that field to the page, post, or content type where you want to use the background video.

Once the field is available, add your video source and save. Depending on your setup, this may be a YouTube URL, Vimeo URL, MP4 file URL, oEmbed field value, or another supported video source.

Connect The Custom Field To The Background Video

Once your video source has been added to the custom field, open the Divi Builder and edit the section where you want to display the background video.

Open the Content > Background and hover over the video tab to reveal the dynamic content icon.

Select the icon to open the dynamic content popup, then choose the custom field that contains your video source. The dynamic content icon appears when hovering over the Video tab, just like other supported dynamic fields in Divi.

Dynamic background videos have been one of those Divi requests that felt impossible for years. Thanks to Divi 5 and Divi Dynamic Content Helper, you can now use external video sources, custom fields, and dynamic content together in a workflow that feels completely natural inside the builder. Better yet, the feature works naturally with Divi’s existing background settings, making it feel like it has always been part of the builder.
