In this tutorial, I’ll show you how the new Smart Search Matching feature in our Divi Search Helper plugin improves search relevance by filtering weak keyword matches and prioritizing more meaningful results.

Why Default WordPress Search Isn’t Always Enough
WordPress has always used a fairly simple approach to searching. When someone enters a search, WordPress looks for matching words throughout your content and returns posts and pages that contain those words. While that works reasonably well for simple searches, it can become less accurate as searches get longer and more conversational.
For example, if someone searches for “how to train a dog,” the default search doesn’t really understand that the visitor is looking for content about dog training. Instead, it treats each word as a potential match. Common words like “how,” “to,” and “a” can influence the results, and pages that only mention one of the important keywords may appear alongside genuinely relevant content.
As more people become accustomed to searching the way they talk, thanks in part to AI tools and improved search engines, this limitation has become much more noticeable. Visitors naturally expect search results to focus on what they actually meant, not just individual words that happen to appear on a page.

How Smart Search Matching Improves Search Results
To address this, I added a new Smart Search Matching feature to our Divi Search Helper plugin. Rather than treating every word in a search query equally, Smart Search Matching focuses on the keywords that actually matter and filters out weaker matches.
Ignore Common Filler Words
Words like “how,” “to,” “a,” “the,” and similar filler words rarely add meaningful context to a search. Smart Search Matching automatically ignores these words so they don’t influence the results.
For example, when someone searches for:
how to train a dog
the search focuses on the meaningful keywords instead of every individual word in the sentence. This helps reduce weak matches that happen simply because a page contains common words found almost everywhere.
Require Stronger Keyword Matches
Instead of returning pages that only contain one matching keyword, Smart Search Matching looks for stronger matches based on the important keywords in the search.
This helps reduce unrelated results and keeps the search focused on pages that are genuinely about the topic the visitor is searching for.
Prioritize More Relevant Results
When multiple pages match a search, Smart Search Matching prioritizes the pages that are most relevant based on the keywords that remain after filtering.
Rather than simply returning every possible match, the results become more focused, making it easier for visitors to find the content they’re actually looking for.
